BNE Chapter - July - Brisbane River Headwaters Run

About this event

Brisbane River Headwaters Run

The usual Brisbane Chapter weekend in July is occupied by Macleans Bridge, but we are afforded a perfect alternative with June having a rare 5th Sunday on June 30th, not otherwise occupied by another chapter.

The theme of our run is the Brisbane River Headwaters Run. The headwaters of the Brisbane River feeds the Northern ends of Wivenhoe Dam, which is also fed by the Somerset Dam, that is in turn fed by the Stanley River.

Few Queenslanders see the headwaters of the Brisbane River, which are beyond Linville up a road almost no-one has reason to travel.

We are going to drive the banks of both the Brisbane and Stanley rivers, making multiple crossings, and our destination will be the wonderful Linville Hotel. Last time we visited the Linville Hotel, in June 2021 with John and Marion Tait, we stopped at Linville, but this time we will go further North through Linville 24km up Mount Stanley Road, following the banks of the Brisbane River, and crossing it 12 times. This is definitely a dry season run.

Then we'll turn around where the bitumin ends, and return to Linville waving at all the other groups coming the other way.

Our Run rather perfectly commences at the Big Fish, once a lonely service station with a go kart track by the Torbull turnoff of the Bruce Highway. It is today a massive complex with a new Servo, every brand of fast food, a huge Coles, and a bunch of specialty stores. We'll park along the wall by the KFC.

From the Big Fish we will head to Peachester and trace the Stanley River along Commissioners Flat, and Neurem Road to our Morning Tea stop at Yowie Park by the Visitors Centre in Kilcoy where we can BYO or hit the Cafe over the road for Coffee.

After Kilcoy we have some great detours, including the wonderful Gregors Creek Road enroute to Linville, our Brisbane River experience, and our lunch destination.
